The illustration represents my daughter’s belief in her Ukrainian heritage and her passion for Ukrainian dance. I am also incredibly taken with the intricacy and intertwining patterns of the Art Nouveau style. Upon quickly sketching my daughter sitting beside me one night, the composition took form. The Pre-Christian costuming seemed to blend itself into the patterning of the artwork so easily. This piece holds a special place in my heart and is a symbol of my Art style.
I experimented with the image, taking the simple line drawing of the original colour version and kept the black and red colouring. The combination created a dramatic symbolism of Ukrainian culture particularly that of the traditional red poppy, the national flower of Ukraine.
