Title of Original Illustration: Hopak
Medium: Watercolour and Pencil Crayon
Hopak is an Ukrainian folk dance that was originally of an improvised nature. The name is derived from “hopaty” which means, “to leap and stamp one’s feet”. The dance itself arose as an all male kozak dance and gradually spread throughout Ukraine. It is now considered the “National Dance of Ukraine”. This image is a collage of the breathtaking movement and energetic finale dance where men and women try to outdo each other with their spins and leaps. (Poltava/Central Ukraine)
